West Alabama rallies to snap Union’s three match home win streak

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University volleyball fell 3-2 (25-27, 20-25, 25-19, 25-21, 15-7) Friday night to the University of West Alabama. Union dropped to 7-17 on the season and 3-9 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama improved to 10-14 overall and 3-10 in league play.
 
Union led 2-0 and looked to be cruising to a fourth straight home victory. Union trailed 6-1 in both the first and second sets before rallied each time to lead the match 2-0.
 
However, West Alabama stormed back in the third set. After trailing 7-6 in set three, West Alabama rallied to go up by as many as six points several times late before taking the 25-19 win.
 
In the fourth set, Union seemed to have regained momentum and control of the match with a 12-6 lead. However, West Alabama again rallied and finally overtook Union 22-21. Union led 21-18 before the Tigers scored seven straight points to tie the match.
 
West Alabama cruised in the fifth set as they never trailed on their way to a 15-7 win.
 
Serving was a key factor in the match as Union. Union recorded 7 aces to 12 aces for West Alabama. However, Union stumbled with 15 service errors, to eight from West Alabama.
 
Union was led by Kristin Cook with 14 kills and Deja Moorer with 11 kills. Mallory Baker and Hannah Huguley added nine kills each. Lydia Wright led with 38 assists and a team-high three aces. Elise Seufert led with 20 digs and McKenna Carter led with eight blocks.
 
West Alabama was led by Sadie Beam with 19 kills and Yanesha Johnson with 12 kills. Carly Wehling led with 24 assists, while Callie Murphy added 18 assists. Wehling led with four aces, Cythina Smith led with 16 digs, and Elizabeth Culhane led with four blocks.
 
Up next for Union will be a home match, Saturday, November 2 versus No. 21 West Florida at 1:00 p.m.
