Union men's soccer stumbles 3-0 at Alabama Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Union University men's soccer came away with a 3-0 loss at the University of Alabama Huntsville Friday evening. The Bulldogs dropped to 3-4-1 overall, 1-4-1 in Gulf South Conference play. The Chargers improved to 5-3-1, 3-3 in the GSC.
 
Kyle Simmons, the current Gulf South Conference goal-scoring leader put the Chargers in front 1-0 at 13:25. Anthony Benitez, who leads the Gulf South in assists, sent a crossing pass to Simmons to claim the advantage. Simmons struck again at 32:24 sending a ball from Mitch Wilson past goalkeeper Matt Kesler for a 2-0 edge. Seth Guiler took the lone Union shot of the opening half.  
 
Union took two shots, one each from Diego Santos and Guiler in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but neither went by Chargers goalkeeper Will Carpenter. The lead grew to 3-0 for the Chargers when Simmons recorded an unassisted goal with just under 30 minutes remaining in the match to complete his hat trick. Trey Scogin and Joel Ronkko had opportunities in the closing moments of the contest but neither shot resulted in a goal for the Bulldogs.
 
Union is scheduled to return to action at Christian Brothers (Tenn.) University Friday, October 11 at 7:30 p.m.
