ROME, Ga. – The Union University men's soccer team could not hold on as Shorter (Ga.) University rallied to defeat Union 4-3. Union dropped to 3-10-1 on the season 1-10-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter improved to 9-5-2 on the season and move into second place in league standings at 8-4-1.
The loss for Union was the ninth straight loss since starting the season 3-1-1.
Shorter scored first just over three minutes into the match on a goal from Robert Ochieng, assisted by Julian Kitkowski. Union responded just seven minutes later on a goal from
Clayton Martin, assisted by
Jordan McCaskill. Then in the 13
th minute, Union took the lead on a goal from
Seth Guiler, assisted by
Caleb Mills. Union moved ahead 3-1 in the 34
th minute on a goal from
Taylor Mayo, assisted by
Alex Pratt. Union seemed to be heading for the road upset.
However, just prior to the half, Shorter cut into Union's lead on a goal from Gavin Smith, assisted by Lucas Cavenco. Union led 3-2 at the half.
In the second half, Shorter continued the comeback with a another quick goal to start the period. Just over two minutes into play in the second half, Shorter's Sam Clare tied the match, on a corner kick assist from Diego Gonzalez.
After both teams combined for six goals in just over 47 minutes of play, the scoring slowed for most of the second half. But in the 75
th minute, Shorter took the lead with Ochieng's second goal of the match. The game winning goal was assisted by Gonzalez.
Shorter outshot Union 23-15 in the match, including 10-8 in the first half and 13-7 in the second half.
Matt Kesler recorded 12 saves in the loss, while Nicolas Ferrigno recorded three saves in the win for his squad.
Up next for Union will be their final home conference match of the season, Friday, November 1 versus Alabama Huntsville at 6:00 p.m.
