JACKSON, Tenn. – Union University and the University of West Alabama engaged in a fierce match at the Smith Memorial Soccer Complex. A total of 34 fouls and five yellow cards were assessed in the contest. The end result was West Alabama earning a 2-1 win, sending Union to a seventh consecutive loss. Union is 3-8-1 overall, 1-8-1 in Gulf South Conference play. The victory moved West Alabama to 9-4-1 and 6-4-1 in league play.
Neither team scored in the opening half. West Alabama took six shots in the first segment, while Union recorded two. One of the two shots for Union came from
Taylor Mayo at 6:28, which West Alabama goalkeeper Lavares Stone collected for a save. Midway through the half
Diego Santos let a shot fly that was high. Four of the six shots taken in the first half by West Alabama were off the foot of Evan Beutler.
West Alabama got on the board when Emmanuel Mondestin played a ball to Alex Brown, who headed in the pass at 52:38 for a 1-0 lead. With a little under 30 minutes remaining in the game
Caleb Mills collected his own rebound and stuck into the back of the goal to level the score 1-1. In slightly over a minute West Alabama regained the lead. Thibault Charmey took a Christian Adkins pass and knocked the ball to the right of goalkeeper
Matt Kesler for a 2-1 advantage. Union had a couple looks in the final minutes of the match to forge overtime, but none of the shots eluded Stone.
West Alabama had 16 shots in the game, while Union made eight. With the goal, Mills moves into a tie for the team lead in goals scored (three) along with Santos and
Alex Pratt.
Union will take on Lee (Tenn.) University on Friday in Cleveland, Tenn. at 6:00 p.m.
