JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's soccer team remained winless at home this season following a 4-1 loss Friday evening to No. 21 West Florida. The Bulldogs are now 3-7-1 overall, 1-7-1 in the Gulf South Conference. The Argonauts climb to 9-3-1 and are atop the GSC at 8-1-1.
Union is 0-3-1 overall at home this season and have lost six straight games in the 2013 season.
For the second Friday in a row Union had a chance to take an early lead with a penalty kick. Like the Oct. 11 attempt, the opponent's goalkeeper on this occasion West Florida's Frederik Bruhn, made a save of an
Alex Pratt shot to deny Union the first tally. Fernando Silveira recorded an assist when Felipe Oliveira put the visitors in front with a goal at 40:26 for a 1-0 lead. Earning his first start in goal Union's
Taylor Smith made four saves in the first half.
Silveira got in the scoring column at 53:33 to make the score 2-0. Oliveira put another ball into the goal with 75:16 showing on the clock for a 3-0 West Florida advantage. Freshman
Joel Ronkko playing in his sixth collegiate match for Union got his first assist by passing to
Seth Guiler, who picked up his first goal of the season at 81:10 to draw within 3-1. The final goal came from the head of Marteinn Urbancic who sent a ball from Jack Salafrio into the goal for the 4-1 result.
Union aims to end their home struggles October 20 when they take on the University of West Alabama at 4:30 p.m. at the Smith Memorial Soccer Complex.
