Union men's soccer falls 2-0 at Christian Brothers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Christian Brothers University used a powerful combination Friday evening to claim a home win 2-0 over Union University. The reserve duo of Paul Banks and Matt Derise notched the assists and goals, respectively for the Buccaneers. Union dropped their fourth straight match to fall to 3-5-1 overall, 1-5-1 in Gulf South Conference action. Christian Brothers improved to 6-5 and 4-4 in the GSC.
 
Union had an opportunity to go in front first after being awarded a penalty kick at 11:28. As Union striker Diego Santos was advancing into a scoring position, Christian Brothers goalkeeper Britton McGuire in the judgment of the head referee John White was overly aggressive in his pursuit to halt Santos' offensive threat. McGuire received a yellow card for his action. Krister Andreassen of Union took the penalty kick, which was grabbed by McGuire. The Buccaneers knocked home both of their goals late in the first half. Derise put his first shot of the evening past Union goalkeeper Matt Kesler at 36:37 off a pass from Banks for a 1-0 advantage. Moments later the tandem struck again with Banks guiding the ball to Derise, who crossed a shot into the left corner at 41:55 to make the score 2-0. The Buccaneers maintained the 2-0 lead at the break. Christian Brothers posted 13 shots in the first half, while Union took one.
 
In the second half Union managed to increase their offensive output testing Christian Brothers goalkeeper Jaime Garcia with six shots. Two of the Union shots in the half bounced off the goalpost. Christian Brothers also had six shots after the break with Kesler making three saves. Each team had three corner kicks for the match and two offside violations. Union was whistled for 16 fouls to 10 for Christian Brothers.
 
The Bulldogs return to action at the Smith Memorial Soccer Complex at 4:15 p.m., October 13 against Delta (Miss.) State University.
