Union volleyball tops Albany State, falls to Florida Tech

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Union University volleyball team split their two matches for the second straight day in the Comfort Inn and Suites Classic hosted by the University of Alabama-Huntsville. Union lost to Florida Tech University 3-0 in the first set of the day, before rallying for a tough 3-2 win over Albany State (Ga.) University.
 
Union's record on the season is 2-2. Florida Tech is 7-1, while Albany State is 1-4.
 
In the win over Albany State, Union took the first set 25-20, leading for the majority of the set. However, Albany State rallied back to take sets two and three, 25-18 and 25-16. Set number four was tight for the entire set as it produced six ties and three lead changes through the set. Union evened the match with a 25-21 win. In set five, Union controlled the lead for most of the way and won 15-11. Union was led by Savannah Hughes with 19 kills. Kristen Cook and Abby Wainwright added 12 kills each, while Lydia Wright had 10 kills. Wright led with 48 assists, Jami Humphries led with two aces, Lauren Sprouse led with 13 digs, and Cook led with four blocks.
 
Florida Tech took the first match in straight sets, winning 25-16, 25-15, 25-21. Hughes had seven kills to lead Union, while Wright managed 17 assists. Elise Seufert, Humphries and Wright each had seven digs, while Mallory Baker led with one block.
 
Up next for Union will be their first Gulf South Conference match at West Alabama, Tuesday, September 11.
