Union volleyball splits pair of matches to open the season

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Union University volleyball team opened the 2012 season with a split in their first two matches. Union opened play in the Alabama-Huntsville Classic. The Lady Bulldogs lost the first match to Henderson State (Ark.) 3-1, before knocking off Paine (Ga.) 3-0.
 
In the loss, Union fell behind early and lost 25-11 in the first set. However, Union battled back and made the final three sets very close. Union forced 14 ties and nine lead changes in the second set before falling 26-24. Union won the third set 25-23 and then lost in the final set 25-20. Union was led by Savannah Hughes with 13 kills and freshman Kristen Cook with 11 kills. Lydia Wright led with 35 assists, Jami Humphries and Elise Seufert led with four aces, Seufert and Wright led with 23 and 11 digs respectively, while Cook led with three blocks.
 
In Union's win over Paine, Union rebounded with a sweep 3-0. Union made quick work with a 25-7, 25-15 and 25-8 victory. Hughes led again with 10 kills, Wright led with 13 assists, Suefert led with five aces and 10 digs.
 
Up next for Union will be a another pair of games Saturday in the Alabama-Huntsville Classic. Union faces Florida Tech at noon and Albany State at 2:00 p.m.
