Union volleyball falls to West Georgia 3-0

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University volleyball team dropped their sixth straight match 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-22) to University of West Georgia. Union fell to 3-9 on the season and 0-5 in the Gulf South. Wes Georgia improved to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in league play.
 
Union started out in the first set by playing a tight, back and forth set before taking a 10-9 lead. However, West Georgia was able to run off six straight points and scored 16 of the set's final 20 points to pull away for the win.
 
West Georgia maintained the momentum as they started the second set with a quick 5-2 lead. However, Union responded as they have so many times during this season and battled back to tied the set at 6-6. But again, it was another big run by West Georgia that helped the Wolves pull away. Four straight points and 10 of the next 12 belonged to West Georgia as they extended their lead to 16-8. Union got as close as four points, 19-15 late in the set.
 
The third set had West Georgia jumping out to a 7-3 lead. Union slowly began their comeback and pulled to within two points at 22-20. But West Georgia's Emily Reul answered with one of her match-high 17 kills to stop the Union rally and help seal the win for the Wolves.
 
Union was led by Kristin Cook with 11 kills, while Lydia Wright led with 18 assists. Wright added two aces, led in digs along with Elise Seufert with 10. Savannah Hughes and Mallory Baker led with two blocks each.
 
West Georgia's Ruel's and Amanda Miles each recorded 17 kills in the match to lead the Wolves. Amanda Miller dished out 27 assists, Melissa Holt led with 14 digs and Kendal Williams led with two blocks.
 
Up next for Union will be another home match Saturday, September 29 at 1:00 p.m. versus Alabama-Huntsville.
