JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University volleyball team dropped a home match to Shorter (Ga.) University 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-14) Thursday night. Union fell to 3-8 on the season and 0-4 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter improved to 9-1 overall and 3-1 in league play.
Union dropped their fifth straight match of the season. The Lady Bulldogs are in the midst of a seven match home streak, going 0-5 thus far with matches Friday night versus West Georgia and Saturday afternoon versus Alabama-Huntsville.
In the first set, Shorter jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead. Union slowly began to rally as they cut the deficit down to 12-9 and 13-10. However, the Hawks maintained a small advantage before scoring the last four points to close out the set.
Shorter again came out strong in the second set, leading 6-1. But Union never quit, coming all the way back to take a 12-11 lead after a kill by
Erin Hennesy. Union led 14-12 and 17-15, but could not put away the Hawks. Shorter scored 10 of the next 13 points, including five in a row to get the win.
The third set was close for most of the first half of the set. After tying the match a few times, Union trailed 9-8 before Shorter made its run. Shorter scored 11 of the next 14 points on their way to a match clinching win.
Union was led by
Kristin Cook with 10 kills.
Lydia Wright added 11 assists to lead the way. Cook added eight digs and two blocks, both team highs.
Shorter was led by Jasmine Crook with 13 kills, Jordan Corder with 30 assists, and Tanequa Whitman with 13 digs, and Leslie Welch led with three blocks.
Up next for Union is another home conference match Friday night at 7:00 p.m. versus West Georgia.
