JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's soccer team doubled their largest goal output on the season in a 6-2 win over University of Alabama-Huntsville. Union improved to 3-2-2 on the season and 2-1-1 in league play. Alabama-Huntsville dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in league play.
In the first five matches of the season, Union managed just seven total goals, scoring no more than two goals in any match. However, in the last two matches, Union has exploded for nine goals, including a 3-1 win at Shorter (Ga.) Saturday.
Union scored first, just under two minutes into the match on a breakaway goal from
Guilherme Reis. Alabama-Huntsville responded to Union's first goal with a match-tying goal just three minutes later when Kyle Simmons found the back of the net.
Guilherme Celli continued the scoring outburst to start the match and put Union up for good at the 4:55 mark, assisted by
Clayton Martin.
Union added a second goal from Reis and then a goal from
Alysson Mohl in the first half to lead 4-1 at the break.
In the second half, Union added two more goals, one from
Diego Santos and the final goal from
Krister Andreassen on an penalty kick. Simmons scored late for the Chargers with his second goal of the night.
In addition to his first half goal, Celli also added one assist on the night.
Kemal Gogic and Mohl also had an assist. Ragnar Leosson assisted Simmon's final goal for the Chargers.
Union outshot Alabama-Huntsville 16-9 in the match, including 10-3 in the first half. Union goalie
Matt Kesler had three saves in the match. Kel Market started in goal for Alabama-Huntsville, playing 24minutes with a save and three goals allowed. Michael Winstone kept the final 66 minutes, with three saves and three goals allowed.
Up next for Union will be a road match at Delta State (Miss.), Friday, September 28 at 3:30 p.m.
