Union volleyball falls to No. 17 West Florida in home opener

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's volleyball had the tough task of facing No. 17 University of West Florida for their home opener at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union dropped the match to West Florida 3-0 (25-8, 25-10, 25-16). Union is now 3-5 overall and 0-2 in the Gulf South Conference. West Florida improved to 7-6 on the season and 4-1 in league play.
 
West Florida took control early, scoring the first three points and running out to a 21-5 advantage. In the second set, Union trailed 3-2, before the Argonauts ran off seven of the next eight points to pull away. In the third set, West Florida again jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead. But Union fought back to win five of the next seven points. Union played tough and again pulled to within three points, 16-13, late in the set.
 
Union was led by Savannah Hughes with seven kills, while Kristen Cook added six kills. Linsey Mirtsching led with 13 assists, Erin Hennesy and Lydia Wright each added one ace, Lauren Sprouse and Wright led with four digs, and Abby Wainwright and Mallory Baker added a block each.
 
West Florida was led by Lindsay Homme with 15 kills. Autumn Duyn added 11 kills. KC Dobbins led with 17 assists and two aces, Colleen Starrs added nine digs, and Abby Timmer led with three blocks.
