ROME, Ga. – The Union University men's soccer team used a big first half to win 3-1 at Shorter University Saturday afternoon. Union improved to 2-2-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter dropped to 2-5-1 on the season and 1-3 in league play.
Union scored the first of their two early goals in the 15
th minute of play when
Alysson Mohl found the back of the net.
Guilherme Reis put Union up 2-0 just three minutes later with his team-leading fifth goal of the year. Both first half goals for Union were assisted by
Guilherme Celli.
In the second half, Union added a third goal in the match in the 54
th minute, this time a header from
Alex Pratt, assisted by
Chip Crockarell. Shorter added their only goal of the match in the 63
rd minute on a penalty kick from Irvin Espinal.
Matt Kessler record four saves for Union in his 90 minutes of work, with just the lone penalty kick goal allowed. Ryan Edwards played the first 45 minutes in goal for Shorter, allowing two goals and recording three saves. Austen Trevers allowed a goal and recorded one save in the second half for Shorter.
Union outshot shorter 16-12 in the game, including 9-5 in the second half. Reis led Union with four shots, while Irvin paced the Hawks with five shots.
Up next for Union will be a home conference match, Monday, September 24 at 7:00 p.m. versus Alabama-Huntsville.
