MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Union University volleyball team earned a split in a tri-match played at the University of Arkansas-Monticello Friday. Union first defeated Mississippi Valley State University 3-0, then fell to the host Arkansas-Monticello in 3-1 in the back-to-back matches. Union is now 3-4 on the season.
Union won in straight sets 25-21, 25-22, 25-20 over Mississippi Valley State. The match featured 24 ties and 15 lead changes, but Union was able to pull away in each set for the win. Kristen Cook and
Savannah Hughes led Union with 10 kills each.
Linsey Mirtsching and
Lydia Wright led with 18 and 16 assists respectively. Wright added a team-high 10 digs,
Elise Seufert posted a season high six aces, and Cook led with five blocks.
After their first set, Union faced Arkansas-Monticello and battled the host in tight four-set match. Union lost 26-24, 25-19, 21-25, 25-16. The score was tied 30 times and the lead changed sides 15 times in the match. Despite dropping the match, Union was close or led late in each of the first three sets. Union led 24-21 in the first set, was tied 18-18 in the second set, and won the third set. In the fourth set, Union led 9-8, but wore down as the set went on.
Up next for Union will be their first home match of the season as they play No. 24 West Florida, Saturday, September 22 at 3:00 p.m.
