Union women’s soccer falls to No. 7 West Florida 2-0

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's soccer team fell 2-0 to No. 7 West Florida University Friday night at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex in their first Gulf South Conference match of the season. Union dropped to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the Gulf South. West Florida improved to 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in league play.
 
Union and West Florida played 44 minutes and 59 seconds of scoreless soccer in the first half. However, a last second kick from Sashana Campbell of West Florida found the back of the net as the clock expired. After a few minutes of deliberation by the officials, the goal was awarded to West Florida. The Argonauts led 1-0 at the break. They outshot Union 13-1 in the first 45 minutes of play.
 
In the second half, Union managed a few more attacks but could not break through the West Florida defense to score. The Argonauts added an insurance goal from Rachel Cutts in the 53rd minute of play. Union was outshot 9-3 in the second half.
 
Sarah Story recorded one save in her shutout performance in goal for West Florida. Union's defense was strong and Emily Waggoner recorded 11 saves in the match against their first top-10 opponent in NCAA DII competition.
 
Up next for Union will be a pair of road conference matches at West Alabama September 16 and at Shorter (Ga.) September 22. Their next home match is versus conference foe Alabama-Huntsville September 24.
