JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's basketball team posted a 93-33 win over Stillman (Ala.) College Saturday at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 5-3 on the season, while Stillman dropped to 1-7 overall.
Union set a new record for 3-pointers attempted in a game with 46. The old record of 42 attempts occurred versus Mid-Continent (Ky.) in February of 2011.
Union's 15 made 3-pointers is a season high for Union. The school record for makes is 19 which occurred twice, once in 2011 and once is 2006.
In Union's last three games, Union has made 42 3-pointers, after making a total of 40 3-pointers in their first five games.
Stillman opened the game with a basket from Angel Mitchell. Union answered with a basket from
Amber Rechis to tie the game and spark a 26-0 run for the Lady Bulldogs. Stillman's second basket did not occur until the 9:24 mark of the first half. Union's halftime lead of 47-10 was the largest of the half at 37 points.
Union led by as many as 60 points in the second half, including the 93-33 final.
Union was playing without three players in the game due to illness, including starter
LaTesa McLaughlin, and reserved
Emily Sissom and
Chelsea Bodiford. All other 11 players played in the game, with 10 getting in the scoring column. Union was led by
Amber Rechis with 21 points, including five three pointers. She scored 15 of her 21 points in the second half, all coming on her five 3-pointers.
Amy Philamlee scored 12 points and had nine assists, while
Paige Parker added 11 points.
Kelsey Risner picked up 12 rebounds in the game. Union shot 40 percent from the field, 33 percent (15-46) from long range, and 72 percent (18-25) from the free throw line.
Stillman was led by Angel Mitchell with 11 points and Floresa Wilson with seven points. The Lady Tigers shot 21 percent from field, 14 percent (3-21) from long range, and 67 percent (6-9) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be their final two games before the Christmas break. Union will host Rust (Miss.) Friday, December 14 at 6:00 p.m., then Virginia-Wise, Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
