Rechis, Union shoot past West Florida 84-60

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's basketball team posted an 84-60 win over the University of West Florida. Union improved to 4-3 on the season and 2-0 in the Gulf South Conference. West Florida dropped to 2-6 on the season and 0-2 in league play.
                     
Amber Rechis finished with 24 points in the game, all coming from her eight 3-pointers in the game. She was a perfect 5-for-5 from behind the arc in the first half, and finished 8-for-12 in the game.
 
Union made a season high 14 3-pointers in the game, besting their 13 made 3-pointers in Thursday's win over Valdosta State (Ga.). Union's 84 points in the win is a season high.
 
West Florida jumped out early with a 6-0 lead. However, Union settled in and scored eight straight points including 3-pointers from Astrid Huttemann and Amy Philamlee.
 
Over the first 15 minutes of play, the game featured five ties and nine lead changes between the two teams. Union took the lead for good on a 3-pointer from Emily Sissom 32-30 with 4:42 left in the half. Union closed out the half with a 14-5 run and led 43-35 at the break.
 
In the second half, Union's Amy Philamlee gave Union a double-digit lead for good with a layup at the 15:06 mark, 60-50. Union led by as many as 25 points, before taking the84-60 final.
 
All 12 players that dressed out played in the game for Union, with 11 players making the scoring column. Five different players made at least one 3-pointer in the contest.
 
Union was led by Rechis with a career-high 24 points. Amy Philamlee added 18 points. Philamlee scored 10 of Union's first 20 points, including 12 total in the first half. Shelby Ashcraft added 10 points and eight rebounds. LaTesa McLaughlin dished out 10 assists in the game. Union shot 41 percent from the field, 39 percent (14-37) from 3-point range, and 80 percent (16-20) from the free throw line.
 
West Florida was led by Hanna Vette with 20 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Toynetta Johnson added 14 points and Jaymie Druding scored 10 points. The Argonauts shot 41 percent from the field, 33 percent (4-12) from long range, and 64 percent (12-17) from the free throw line.
 
Up next for Union will be the first of three straight non-conference games before the Christmas break. Union faces Stillman College Saturday, December 8th at home at 2:00 p.m.
