Union’s upset bid at No. 25 Drury falls short

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Union University women's basketball team trailed early, rallied in the second half to take the lead, but fell 69-60 at No. 25 Drury (Mo.) University. Union dropped to 2-3 on the season, while Drury improved to 3-1 overall.
 
Union trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half, 33-18, before going into the half down 33-20. Union's top two scores, Amy Philamlee and LaTesa McLaughlin were held scoreless in the first 20 minutes.
 
Drury opened the second half with a 3-pointer from Bethanie Funderburk to extend their lead to the biggest of the game at 16 points, 36-20. But Union answered with a 3-pointer from Astrid Huttemann that sparked a 25-6 run by the Lady Bulldogs. At the end of that run, Union had taken a 45-42 lead at the 10 minute mark of the second half. Union led by as many as four points, 50-46, with 7:18 left in the game. However, Union could not hold on as Drury outscored Union 23-10 over the final seven minutes to avoid the upset.
 
Union was led by Philamlee with 18 points, all in the second half and 11 coming from the free throw line. Amber Rechis scored 13 points including three 3-pointers. Huttemann added 12 points and Christina Coney scored 10 points. Union shot 31 percent from the field, 28 percent (7-25) from long range, and 73 percent (19-26) from the free throw line.
 
Drury was led by Katie Pritchard with 21 points. Funderburk added 16 points, while Abby Bracker added 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Panthers shot 48 percent from the field, 46 percent (5-11) from behind the arc, and 78 percent (18-23) from the free throw line.
 
Up next for Union will be their first action in the Gulf South Conference as the Lady Bulldogs hosts Valdosta State (Ga.) University, Thursday, November 29 at 6:00 p.m.
