Arkansas-Monticello outlasts Union in five sets

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University volleyball team came up just short in a 3-2 (20-25, 25-12, 24-26, 25-21, 19-17) loss to the University of Arkansas-Monticello. Union dropped to 4-23 on the season, while Arkansas-Monticello improved to 11-21 overall.
                     
Union fought hard in the match on senior night as they honored four-year player and the lone senior, Lauren Sprouse. Union led 2-1 and was serving for the match in set number five before dropping the match.
 
In the first set, Union trailed 3-1 early, but rallied to take their first lead at 6-5. Union never trailed again as Monticello managed four ties. Union led by as many as five points two different times, including the 25-20 final.
 
Set number two was dominated by UAM as they jumped out to a 6-1 lead and then led 14-3 at one point. Their 25-12 lead at the end was the largest lead of the set.
 
In the third set, Union regained momentum in a back and forth set. The set featured seven ties and two lead changes. Union led 21-20 and then scored four straight points to get the 25-20 win.
 
The fourth set was another close one with four ties and two lead changes. Union managed a 5-0 run, while Arkansas-Monticello recorded a 4-0 run during the set. With the set tied 19-19, Arkansas-Monticello scored six of the last eight points to tie the match at 2-2.
 
Set five was the closest of all with the Union crowd roaring on every point. Thirteen ties and six lead changes in the deciding set provided great entertainment for the senior night crowd. Union trailed 13-12 before scoring two straight points to serve for the match, leading 14-13. Arkansas-Monticello answered, but failed to convert on two straight match points. Union tied the match at 17-17. However, two straight points secured the win for UAM.
 
Union was led by Savannah Hughes with 16 kills, followed by Kristin Cook and Erin Hennessy with 11 and 10 kills respectively. Lydia Wright led with 30 assists, while Linsey Mirtsching added 23 assists. Mirtsching and Sprouse led with two aces, Elise Seufert led with 13 digs, and Mallory Baker led with five blocks.
 
Arkansas-Monticello was led by Amy Kleypas with 21 kills and Holly Schweigert with 11 kills. Both Amy Bazemore and Haley Goldwater dished out 27 assists, Allison Beardsley led with 22 digs, while Schweigert and Kleypas led with two blocks each.
 
This was the final home game of the year for Union. The Lady Bulldogs will close out the regular season with three straight road conference matches, the first is Tuesday, November 8 at Shorter (Ga.).
