CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Union University women's volleyball team advanced to the semifinal round of the NCCAA MidEast Region Tournament, going 2-1 in the first day of play. The tournament is being hosted by Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga.
Union (6-27), seeded fifth in the tourney, opened with a 3-2 win over 4-seed Victory (18-7) University. Victory won the marathon first set 31-29, before Union rallied to win the next two sets, 25-17, 25-21. Victory forced a fifth set by winning the second set 26-24. Union took the deciding set 15-12.
Union then faced top-seed Campbellsville (Ky.) University (27-10), falling 3-1. The two teams split the first two sets, with Campbellsville winning the first 25-18, followed by Union winning 25-18. Despite Union playing touch and keeping the Tigers in reach, Campbellsville won the match by taking the final two sets 25-22, 25-22.
In their final game Friday, Union had a rematch with Victory and came away with a 3-2 win to stay alive and move into the semifinals. In another 5-set match, Victory again won the first set (25-11), followed by two Union wins (25-12, 25-23). Victory took set four 25-16, with Union standing strong in the fifth set, 15-10.
Union faces 2-seed Covenant (Ga.) College (25-7) at 10:00 a.m. Saturday in an elimination match. The winner must defeat Campbellsville twice to claim the region title.
