Three-pointers spark Union’s 70-50 season opening win over Brevard

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's basketball team opened the 2012-13 season with a 70-50 win over Brevard (N.C.) College Friday night in the Lady Bulldog Classic. Union plays Saturday in the classic at 4:00 p.m. versus NCAA DII No. 10 Clayton State (Ga.), who topped Union's fellow Gulf South Conference opponent Delta State 68-51 Friday night.
                     
All three of the other teams in the class are NCAA DII teams, with Clayton State (2011) and Delta State (1975, 1976, 1977, 1989, 1990, 1992) having won NCAA DII National Titles. Brevard has been a DII member since 2008 after leaving the NAIA.
 
Union drained 13 three pointers for 50 percent on the night, including 8-of-15 in the first half. Sophomore guard Amber Rechis and Freshman Kelsey Risner each hit four 3- pointers in the game. Six different Union players scored from behind the arc.
 
Union trailed 3-2 early after a three pointer from Brevard's Alyssa Cutshaw. However, a Rechis 3-pointer put Union on top for good. The Lady Bulldogs went on a 16-0 run to take control, leading 18-3 following an Astrid Huttemman 3-pointer at the 12:09 mark.  Union led by as many as 29 points twice in the first half, before taking a 44-23 advantage into the locker room.
 
In the second half, Union and Brevard played even for the first eight minutes, with Union maintaining their 21 point lead, 50-29. However, Union cooled off while Brevard started making shots. Brevard got as close as 13 points, 56-43 with 8:11 left to play. But Union responded with and 8-0 run to retake control. Union cruised down the stretch for the 70-50 win.
 
Union was led with five players in double figures. Rechis and Risner each scored 12 points, all coming from long range. Carly Daniel added 11 points, while Amy Philamlee and Christina Coney scored 10 points. All five of the players that score double figures for Union are freshmen or sophomores for the Lady Bulldogs. Union shot 42 percent from the field, 50 percent (13-26) from long range, and 81 percent (13-16) from the free throw line.
 
Brevard was led by Micheala Watkins with 11 points and Tempestt Mack with nine points. Brevard shot 32 percent from the field, 35 percent (6-17) from behind the arc, and 60 percent (12-20) from the free throw line.
