JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's soccer team posted a 2-0 win over Delta State (Miss.) University Friday evening at Smith Soccer Complex. Union improved to 8-3-4 on the season and 7-2-3 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State University dropped to 7-9-1 overall and 4-6 in league play.
The win for Union is their fourth straight, which includes shutouts in three of the four games.
The first half of the match was scoreless for nearly 44 minutes of play until Union managed a goal with 1:18 left in the half.
Guilherme Reis, the reigning TSWA Player of the Week, scored on a header when
Kemal Gogic placed a perfect cross into the box. Union led 1-0 at the half.
In the second half, Union added an insurance goal in the 66
th minute of play when
Seth Guiler scored on a one-timer from Reis.
Union outshot Delta State 20-7 in the match, including 11-2 in the first half. Reis led Union with six shots, while Jason Lambert led the Statesmen with two shots.
Rainer Pires recorded his third shutout of the season, getting five saves in the process. Mack Pytyck recorded six saves in the loss.
Up next for Union will be the final regular season match of the season when Union host Cumberland (Tenn.) Monday, October 25 at 7:00 p.m. for senior night.
