JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's soccer team posted a 3-0 win over Shorter (Ga.) University Saturday afternoon at Smith Soccer Complex. Union improved to 6-3-4 on the season and 5-2-3. Shorter dropped to 3-11-1 overall and 2-7 in league play.
Union's
Guilherme Reis took care of the offense for Union as he scored all three goals for the Bulldogs. His first came in the 27
th minute of play, an unassisted goal where he beat his defender with several moves. Union led 1-0 at the half.
He added two more second half goals, one in the 54
th minute and the other in the 78
th minute.
Clayton Martin and
Diego Santos recorded assists those the final two goals.
Union had numerous close calls in the match with opportunities to score other goals. Martin, who led Union with four shots in the match, had three misses in the first half that just went wide of the goal.
Union outshot Shorter 19-8 in the match, including 8-1 in the first half.
Rainer Pires recorded three saves for Union in his 90 minutes in goal. Ryan Edwards played the first 45 minutes in goal for Shorter, getting three saves and allowing one goal. Austen Trevers played the final 45 minutes in goal, recording six saves and allowing two goals.
Up next for Union will be a road match October 24 at Christian Brothers.
