JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's soccer team fell 2-1 at home to the University of West Alabama Thursday night. Union dropped to 4-3-3 overall and 3-2-2 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama improved to 10-3 overall and 6-1 in league play.
West Alabama is ranked No. 7 in the NCAA DII South Region and has won eight of their last 10 matches.
Union dominated the time of possession and outshot the visiting Tigers 20-10, including 11-4 in the second half. However, Union managed just one first half goal in the loss on a wet night at Smith Soccer Complex.
West Alabama scored first in the 15
th minute of play when Christian Adkins placed a corner kick perfectly in the box and Alex Brown did the rest by sneaking it into the back of the net. Just 14 minute later, Clay Green scored the game-winning goal when he took a break away and sent a shot toward the Union goal. After Union goalie
Matt Kesler seemed to have the shot blocked for the save, the ball slipped through and rolled just across the goal line.
In the 32
nd minute of play, Union cut the deficit in half with a goal from
Diego Santos who headed a pass from
Guilherme Reis for the goal. Union managed may more shots on goal for the remainder of the match, but nothing got past West Alabama goalie Jack Moore. Moore recorded six saves to help his team get the road conference win.
Kesler recorded three saves for Union in goal during the first half.
Rainer Pires spent the second half in goal for Union, allowing no goals and four saves.
Up next for Union will be a road conference match Saturday, October 13 at West Florida.
