Before Union
Johnson prepped at the University School of Jackson in Jackson, Tenn. where he was on the cross country team from 2020 to 2023 and the track team from 2021 to 2023. He was captain of the cross country team from 2021 to 2023. In 2022, Johnson was a TSSAA Division II-A All-Region Cross Country Runner and TSSAA Division II-A State Qualifier. In 2023, he was a TSSAA Division II-A All-Region Cross Country Runner and a TSSAA Division II-A All-State Cross Country Runner. In track, Johnson and the 4x800 relay team were TSSAA Division II-A Region Champions in 2022 and 2023, third in the TSSAA Division II-A State Meet in 2022, and State Champions for TSSAA Division II-A in 2023. Also, in 2023, he was TSSAA Division II-A All-Region for the 3200 meter race and TSSAA Division II-A All-Region for the 1600 meter race.

Off the course, Johnson was in the National English Honor Society from 2022 to 2024, the National Honor Society from 2022 to 2024, the National Science Honor Society from 2023 to 2024, and the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society from 2023 to 2024. He also earned AP Scholar Distinction at Commencement in May 2024.
