Before Union 
Fynaardt began his college career at Drake University, where he recorded a 14:48 (5k) and was named to the Dean's List.

He prepped at Des Moines Christian, where he ran cross country and track for four years. Fynaardt was a four-time Elite All-State runner in both cross country and track. He set the school record with a 15:28 (5k), 9:12 (3200m), and a 4:19 (1600m). Off the course, he was a member of the National Honors Society.
