Before Union
Karnes prepped at NCOE High School where he played four years of golf, four years of basketball and one year of baseball. He was named MVP of his golf team all four years. Karnes is the school record holder with a score of 32 in a 9-hole event. He qualified for the sectional tournament four times, posted a fifth place finish in the region tournament in 2014 and was a state qualifier in 2014. Karneswon the Crab Orchard Country Club Tournament with a 69 and posted five top-10 finishes on the SIGA Junior Tour in 2014. In basketball, he was the free throw percentage leader twice, 3-pointer percentage leader once and was a three year starter. Off the course, Karnes was in the High Honor Roll all four years, was ranked second in this class, was the junior marshall at graduation as a junior, WYSE team member, peer tutoring leader, three year class president and four year student council member (vice president one year).
