Before Union
Berends prepped at Hudsonville (Mich.) High School where she ran cross country for four seasons and track and field for three seasons. She helped lead her cross country team to a pair of conference titles and four region titles. She was named Most Improved, all-conference, and all-region as a cross country runner. In track and field, she earned all-conference honors. Off the course, she was named a National Merit Finalist, highest honors Summa Cum Laude, earned the Excellence in Mathematics Award, Excellence in Music Band Award, Eagle Renaissance Gold, Eagle Renaissance Blue, academic letter, bronze and silver awards. Berends has two sisters that are also runners for Union's cross country team.
