Before Union
McKelvey prepped at Shoals (Ala.) Christian School where she ran cross country, while also playing basketball and tennis. She was named all-area honorable mentioned in cross country as a senior and was team captain for three seasons. In tennis, McKelvey was named to the all-area team. Her cross country team posted a third place finish in the sectionals in 2011. Off the course, McKelvey was a member of the National Honor Society, was the senior class representative, and ranked third in her graduating class. Her younger sister is also a runner on Union's cross country team.
