Before Union
Whitnell prepped at Mayfield (Ky.) High School where he played golf, tennis, basketball and baseball. In golf, he led his team to the Deer Lakes Golf Tournament Title in 2011. Whitnell was named golf MVP four times and was team captain all four years. He placed second in the Class-A Region Tournament as a junior and senior. In both his junior and senior years, he advanced to the state tournament, finishing 11th both times. Whitnell won the 2012 Drake Creek Junior Golf Title, the 2011 West Kentucky Junior Golf Title, and shot the best round in the Miller Memorial Golf Classic. Whitnell was tennis MVP four times. In basketball, he was named player of the week, region all-star, best 3-point percentage, best free throw percentage and team captain. Off the course and courts, he was the senior class Valedictorian, Wendy's High School Heisman Award winner, Paducah Sun Teen of the Week and President of the MayfieldGraves County Youth Leadership Program. He was a member of the FBLA, Student of the Month, Beta Club, National Honors Society and Chemistry Team.
