Before Union
Russell graduated from Jackson (Miss.) Preparatory School she he ran cross country for six years and track for four seasons. He helped lead his cross country team to three MAIA AAA State Titles (2012, 2013, 2014). His track team also won the state title in 2013 and were runners-up in 2015. In cross country, Russell was named the Clarion Ledger Best of Preps All-State, placed third in the MAIA AAA State Championship, was a 2-time team MVP, earned the Patriot Leadership Award, the Rutherford Model Runner Award, and was named Most Improved in 2010. Russell placed the top 10 in each of his Mississippi Cross Country Meet in 2014. HIs personal best was a time of 16:48 in a 5K at the Watson Classic. Russell also earned numerous award in track. Off the course, Russell was the head of the school honor roll, earned the American Legion Award, a member of the National Honors Society, Cum Laud Society, Mu Alpha Theta, earned the Sarah Elizabeth Shelton Endowed Scholarship, was a student council representative, Patriot League Recruiter and was voted Most School Spirited.
