JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team lost 78-76 to The University of Alabama in Huntsville Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, David Blackstock Court. Union dropped to 17-9 overall and 12-6 in the Gulf South Conference. UAH improved to 22-4 overall and a league-best 18-1 conference record.
Union falls into a three-way tie for second place with Trevecca and Delta State. UAH clinched the regular season title today with the win over Union.
Union trailed for most of the game until the final minute. UAH led by eight, 71-63, with 2:59 left in the game. A 3-pointer from Courtney Zensen sparked a 8-0 run for Union to tie the game, 71-71, with 1:42 left. After a couple of free throws from UAH, Union took its first lead, since a 5-3 lead early in the game, on a 3-pointer from Morgan Escobedo. Union led 74-73 with 58 seconds left. UAH regained the lead with two free throws, then Union took the lead when Katie Yoder hit a pair from the charity stripe. UAH added two more free throws to lead 77-76 with 28 seconds left. Union had the ball, but a turnover gave the ball back to UAH. The Chargers hit one free throw to push the lead to 78-76. Union had one last shot at a tie or win, but failed to get a shot off in the final seconds.
After Union's early 5-3 lead, UAH led 22-16 at the end of one. The second period was fast-paced with UAH edging Union 21-20 to lead 43-36 at the half.
In a very low-scoring third quarter that had both teams go on an almost five-minute scoring drought, UAH again edged Union 15-13 to lead 58-49 going into the fourth.
Union outscored UAH 27-20 in the fourth but fell just short.
UAH's largest lead of the night was 22-10 late in the first quarter.
Union was led by Yoder with a season-high19 points. Zensen added 18 points, while Escobedo scored 16. Union shot 48 percent from the field, 37 percent (11-30) from 3-point range, and 82 percent (9-11) from the free throw line.
UAH was led by Maddox with 26 points. Wilken scored 23 points, and White added 13. UAH shot 43 percent from the field, 44 percent (8-18) from 3-point range, and 83 percent (24-29) from the foul line.
