Union men's golf 10th at Currahee Invitational

TOCCOA, Ga. - The Union University men's golf team posted a 10th place finish at the Currahee Invitational co-hosted by Anderson (S.C.) University and Erskine (S.C.) College. The 54-hole event was played at the Currahee Golf Club and featured 13 teams with 72 golfers. 

Union's Andrew Westmoreland led the Bulldogs with an even-par score for the event, finishing tied for 13th place. He shot a 1-over, 73 in the first round, was 3-under in the second round, and 2-over in the final round. He finished with eight birdies, including four in the second round Monday. His second round 69 was the third best score of the round. He finished six shots out of first place, a pair of 6-under scores posted by Mitchel McNeil (University of South Carolina Aiken) and Drew Andrews (Erskine). 

Union's team fired a +7 in the first round, even-par in the second round, and +12 in Tuesday's final round. Union's second round even-par score was the fourth best team score of the round. USCA won the event at 11-under, while Erskine finished second at 8-under, the only two schools under par for the event. North Greenville finished even-par in third place. 

Freshman golfer Houston Brasfield of Jackson shot the best round for Union on the final day with a 1-under score, jumping 18 spots in one day to finish the event tied for 27th. Brasfield shot 1-over in the first round, 4-over in round two, and fired a 71 in the final round. It was the fourth best score of the round among all participants. He finished with 11 birdies, including five in both the first and final rounds. 

Henry Ashley finished 8-over for the tournament in a tie for 41st place. He shot 4-over in the first, 1-under in the second, and 5-over in the third. Three of his four birdies on the week came in round two. Nolan Smith finished 9-over in 48th place, while Trace Robinson finished 21-over in 64th place. 

Up next for Union will be the final event of the fall schedule, the Citrus Intercollegiate, October 19-20, in Orlando, Florida.
