Union baseball splits opening day doubleheader in Georgia

COCHRAN, Ga. - The Union University baseball team split a doubleheader at Middle Georgia State University Friday to open the season. Union won the first game of the day 9-8 in 11 innings and lost 4-3 in the second game. Both teams are now 1-1 on the season.

In the first game, Union scored first from a 2-RBI double from Grant Ross in the third inning. Union tied the game at 3-3 with a sacrifice fly from Eli Gipson in the seventh, followed by a 2-RBI single from Canyan Pace to lead 5-3. Union again had to rally in the bottom of the ninth, trailing 7-5. Union got RBI singles from Ely Ramsey and Kylon Joyner to force extra innings. Union took the lead for the third time in the game with an unearned run in the 10th. After Middle Georgia tied the game in the bottom of the tenth, Union's fourth lead of the game, 9-8 in the top of the 11th was enough to win. Cole Lannom, who tossed the final four innings, earned the win. He allowed three hits and one run with six strikeouts over the final four innings of work. Ramsey led Union with three hits, while Jordan Allen and Ross added two hits each. Ross and Pace led with two RBI each. Daniel Carter tossed four innings in the start, allowing two runs, with no walks and four strikeouts. Lake Evans (2.0 innings) and Eli Jackson (1.0 innings) also pitched in relief.

More last-inning drama highlighted game two; this time, Union was on the losing end. Union led 3-2 entering the bottom of the seventh. Middle Georgia loaded the bases with one out. Union got the ground ball it needed on a chopper up the middle, but after the force at second, a rushed wide throw to first allowed two runs to score for the win. Union trailed by one early, but took a 2-1 lead on a 2-RBI single from Sam Arnold in the fourth. In the fifth, Allen scored on a wild pitch to put the Bulldogs up 3-1. Middle added a run in the fifth, and that 3-2 score lasted until the bottom of the seventh. Garrett Telaga took the loss, tossing 1.1 innings and allowing two runs, one earned, in the relief effort. Cody Tjomsland tossed the final two-thirds of the final inning, hitting a guy and getting two outs. Chris Troyer tossed 4.2 innings, with two runs, three walks, and four strikeouts in the start. Union managed just four hits in game two, one each from four different players. Arnold led with two RBI.

The two teams will play at noon Central Saturday in the rubber game of the series.
