PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Union University women's basketball team fell 68-50 to California State University Dominguez Hills Wednesday night in the 2025 NCAA D2 WBB Elite Eight National Semifinals. Union, the 7-seed in the Elite Eight, ended its season at 33-4 overall and also had a 19-game winning streak snapped. Third-seeded Cal State Dominguez Hills improved to 36-1 on the season.
This season, Union won its 10th Gulf South Conference Regular Season Title, seventh GSC Tournament Title, and second NCAA D2 WBB South Region Title. Union also made the national semifinals for the second time in their time in the NCAA D2.
For head coach
Mark Campbell, he earned his 775th career win in the national quarterfinals. In his 26 years as head coach at Union, Campbell has advanced to the national semifinals in 13 seasons.
Campbell said, "Sports gives us the opportunity to build quality relationships in a short amount of time. This team has grown more than any team I have ever coached over the last seven months. We knew they had good hearts and good character, but this group has exceeded all expectations. It has been a privilege to coach this group. It is one of the more memorable years I have been blessed with."
In the game, neither team scored for the first two minutes of play. CSUDH jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but it was Union's
Emily Jones with back to back 3-pointers to give Union the 6-4 lead. After a free throw from
Shylee Morrison, Union led 12-8, its largest lead of the game.
CSUDH answered with a 9-2 run to close out the first quarter and led 17-14.
CSUDH continued its run, scoring the first eight points of the second quarter to lead 25-14, and take the momentum, Union stopped the run, but a 3-pointer put CSUDH up 28-16 and deficit stayed in double figures the rest of the night. Union trailed 36-25 at the half.
The 3-seed seemingly put the game away with a 12-2 run to start the third quarter.
Union trailed by as many as 19 points a few times before cutting the deficit to 12 points early in the fourth quarter. But that was as close as they got down the stretch. CDUDH took its largest lead of 20 points late, before taking the 18-point win.
Union was led by Jones with 13 points, the only Lady Bulldog in double figures.
Olivia Lee added seven points. Union struggled from the field, shooting 30 percent, including 22 percent (6-27) from 3-point range. Union hit 10-of-12 free throws for 83 percent.
CSUDH was led by the WBCA National Player of the Year, Nala Williams with 21 points, including 5-of-8 shooting from long range. Asia Jordan scored 19 points with 12 rebounds. Teagan Thurman added 14 points and Christina Jones scored 12. CSUDH shot 46 percent from the field, 30 percent (6-20) from long range, and 50 percent 4-of-8 from the foul line.
