JACKSON, Tenn. - On Saturday night, in front of an electric crowd in Fred DeLay Gymnasium, the No. 9/9 Union University women's basketball team took down the five-seed Lee University 75-53 to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. This was the third meeting between the two teams this season with Union coming out on top twice. The Lady Bulldogs are now 31-3 overall, while the Flames finish the season 25-7 overall.
Alexis Callins scored the first seven points of the game for Union, including back-to-back layups to start the contest and a three-pointer at the 7:44 second mark in the first quarter. Union went on to win the period 20-11. The highlight of the second quarter was a
Bethany Dillard make from well beyond the arc to put Union up 35-21. The Lady Bulldogs' best period was the third as they scored 29 points to Lee's 12. Union added nine in the fourth to solidify the 22-point victory.
Olivia Lee was Union's top scorer, putting up 17 points for her 26
th double-digit performance of the season. She was followed by
Alexis Callins with 11 points and
Shylee Morrison with 10. Overall, the team shot 50 percent (28-56) from the field, 32.4 percent (11-34) from three-point range, and 80 percent (8-10) from the foul line.
Courtney Zensen grabbed the most rebounds for Union with six, and
Jazalyn Anousinh dished out the most assists with four.
Keisharna Lucas and Callins each had three steals in the game, and
Jeremia Montgomery put up two blocks to lead the team.
Mia Hurst led the Flames with 10 points, and Baylee Delbridge had the most boards with five. As a team, Lee shot 27.3 percent (15-55) from the field, 30.4 percent (7-23) from beyond the arc, and 69.6 percent (16-23) from the free throw line.
Up next, the Lady Bulldogs will face three-seed Nova Southeastern University in Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for Mar. 17 at 7:00 p.m. The winner will advance to the Elite Eight in Pittsburgh, Pa.
