JACKSON, Tenn. –
Eli Snelson threw a six-hit complete game,
Carson Chavies hit a three-run home run, and the Union University baseball team topped Mississippi College 7-3 at Fesmire Field on Friday night.
Snelson fanned six Choctaws in his nine innings of work without allowing a walk and went the distance for his fifth time in a Bulldog uniform.
Union (7-8, 2-4 GSC) recorded nine hits, including the third-inning, go-ahead blast and doubles by
Elijah Ramsey and
Grant Ross.
Chavies gave the Bulldogs a first-inning lead when his bunt base hit scored
Colby Davis, who had reached on an infield single and advanced on a wild pitch and
Dyllon Barrett sacrifice.
Davis scored again after a single by Ross, leveling the game at two runs apiece, before Chavies put Union ahead 5-2 with his shot over the right field wall.
Canyon Pace singled to left field in the sixth inning and drove in two more after
Caleb Davis walked,
Hudson Cepparulo reached on a hit, and both advanced on a wild pitch. Union loaded the bases and threatened to make it a big inning when Ross grounded into a 3-2-3 double play.
MC scored two runs in the third inning with a pair of hit batsmen and a pair of singles; Choctaws Korey Cooper and Blaise Breerwood hit doubles in the eighth as the visitors scratched another across.
Choctaw starter Holland Townes went five innings and was tagged with all seven Bulldog runs after allowing eight hits and three walks. He was followed by an excellent outing by Kyle Collett, who allowed one walk and one hit in his three frames.
Ross, Chavies,
Colby Davis,
Caleb Davis, Barrett, and Pace reached base twice for the Bulldogs.
Alec Hardy extended his on-base streak to eight games with a first-inning walk. Ross has reached half a dozen consecutive games.
The multi-hit games were respectively the sixth and fourth of the year for Chavies and Ross.
The Bulldogs and Choctaws will conclude the series on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
