JACKSON, Tenn. –
Ashanie Kennedy scored his third goal in three games on Tuesday night, but a late penalty conversion by Missouri-St. Louis got the Tritons past Union by a score of 3-2 at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex.
In the 88th minute, as the sides appeared to be approaching a draw in which Union had answered each UMSL goal with one of its own, Union's
Daniel Dixon dragged down a Triton, denying him a goal-scoring opportunity, and was shown his second yellow card of the game. Jon Campbell, UMSL's leading scorer, converted a penalty to put the ten-men Union out of contention.
UMSL's three goals came on just four shots on target.
It was inauspicious from the start for the Bulldogs, who allowed a second-minute goal on UMSL's first shot of the game. Union drew level on
Diego Medina's second of the year at 29', and after
Cillian Heaney hit the woodwork in the 38th minute, the teams entered intermission 1-1.
UMSL and Union traded goals in the 61st and 71st minutes. After a
Kenny Nitzsche penalty attempt was saved, the ball found
Ashanie Kennedy, who equalized Union for the second time of the night.
Kennedy is one of just three GSC players with three or more goals this season.
Tuesday's loss is the first of the season for the Bulldogs, who beat Harding and Ouachita Baptist on the opening weekend.
Still, the Bulldogs have scored an average of 2.67 goals per game, among the GSC leaders in the category. Union has scored in all six halves of competition this season.
Next for the team is a 4:00 p.m. meeting with Missouri S&T on Friday as the second of a four-match homestand.
