Lady Bulldogs go 2-0 in exciting first day of Columbus State Classic

JACKSON, Tenn. - On Feb. 9, the Union University softball team went 2-0 in the first day of the Columbus State Classic in Columbus, Ga. The Lady Bulldogs are now 4-2 on the season.

In game one, Union faced Lenior-Rhyne University, who received votes to be in the top-25. Lenior-Rhyne was up 3-1 after the first inning. However, the Lady Bulldogs did not give up, scoring one run in the bottom of the third courtesy of a Courtney Marler double and three in the bottom of the sixth after an RBI single by Mackenzi David and a two RBI single by Sarah Kate Thompson. Union held their lead in the top of the seventh to come away with the win 5-3.

Riley Vaughn started for the Lady Bulldogs, going four innings and allowing three runs while walking six. Emily Claire Felder threw three scoreless innings in relief to get the win. She is now 1-1 on the season.

Union had nine hits in the contest with Morgan Jennings, David, and Thompson collecting two hits a piece and Macey Neal, Zoey Neal, and Marler each having one.

In game two, the Lady Bulldogs played host Columbus State University, who is ranked #23 overall. Union was down 3-1 going into the top of the seventh. With two outs, they mounted a comeback. Macey Neal split the right center gap for a two-RBI double, scoring Thompson and Jennings and tying the game at 3-3. Marler followed with a double to center to drive in Neal to put the Lady Bulldogs ahead, and three batters later Camryn Langley walked, scoring Marler. Union held Columbus State in the bottom of the seventh, winning 5-3.

Addison Abell started for the Lady Bulldogs, hurling four innings and striking out seven while giving up three runs. Lainey Baker finished the last three innings for Union, striking out the side in the fifth and holding Columbus State at bay to get her second win of the season.

Jennings was two for two in the game, and Macey Neal, Zoey Neal, Bryleigh Carneal, Marler, and Thompson each had a hit. Macey Neal led Union in RBIs with three.

Up next, on Feb. 10, the Lady Bulldogs have day two in the Columbus State Classic. They will face Tuskegee University at 9:00 a.m. and Georgia College at 11:00 a.m.
