MONTEVALLO, Ala. - On Saturday afternoon, the No. 17/RV Union University women's basketball team faced the University of Montevallo in what would be the closest GSC contest so far this season for the Lady Bulldogs. The game featured seven lead changes and four ties with Union ultimately coming out on top 71-65. With the win, Union remains in first place in the GSC standings and is the only GSC squad to have a perfect record in conference play (5-0, 10-2 overall). Montevallo drops to 5-6 overall (3-3 GSC).
Union put up 18 points in the first quarter. Eleven of these came from Macey Lee who shot 3-3 from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line in the first 10 minutes. Montevallo stayed close throughout the game as they won the second quarter 18-15 and tied the third 17-17. However, the Lady Bulldogs scored 21 points to the Falcons' 19 in the fourth period to win by 6. Union's largest lead came in the second period when they led 26-16.Â
Alexis Callins and Jeremia Montgomery made their mark on the game in a big way. Callins tied her career high in scoring with a 27 point performance. She shot 62.5 percent (10-16) from the field and 45.5 percent (5-11) from beyond the arc. Montgomery scored her 1,000th career point with a layup at the 2:46 second mark in the first quarter.
Jazalyn Anousinh and Macey Lee set season highs in the game. Anousinh dished out eight assists, her best this season,
while Macey Lee grabbed seven rebounds, the most so far this season for the 6-foot senior.
As a team, Union shot 43.5 percent (27-62) from the field, 36.7 percent (11-30) from three-point range, and 66.7 percent (6-9) from the free throw line.
Isabel Grimes led the Falcons with 15 points. As a team, Montevallo shot 35.7 percent (20-56) from the field, 35.3 percent (6-17) from behind the arc, and 76 percent (19-25) from the free throw line.
This was Union's last game until after the holidays. The Lady Bulldogs will be back in action at home on Jan. 2, 2025, against the University of Alabama in Huntsville with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
