BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Union women's basketball sharpshooter Bethany Dillard has been named GSC Player of the Week presented by Truist, the league office announced Tuesday, after averaging 25.0 points and connecting on 16 of 26 three-point attempts (.615) while playing just 17 minutes per game as the Lady Bulldogs went 2-0.
On Wednesday–in 16 minutes–the senior scored 26 in a win over Kentucky State, shooting 8-13 from beyond the arc. In Friday's defeat of Christian Brothers, Dillard poured in 24 more, this time attempting nothing by triples–she again went 8-13. The native of Maumelle, Arkansas, led Union to consecutive 20-three-pointer nights for the first time in the school's history with the Gulf South Conference. Her Lady Bulldogs sunk 24 from deep against KSU–the most by a GSC team since the 2015-16 season–and 20 on Friday.
Between the games, Dillard had four steals and a single turnover. She shot 17-28 from the floor (.607).
Dillard leads the GSC with 37 three-point makes and 3.7 per game while shooting at a GSC-second .468 clip. She has 15 more makes than the conference percentage leader and holds two of the three single-game performances of eight or more three-point shots by GSC players this season.
Nationally, Dillard ranks first in three-pointers per game among Division II competitors and second in total makes–three behind the leader. Union leads the nation with 12.9 triples per game–2.3 more per night than second-place Ferris State–and 14th in success rate. Fourteen Lady Bulldogs have connected from downtown this season, and five average over one make per game.
Through 10 outings, Dillard boasts three 20-point games, five with 15, and five nights with five or more three-point makes–all in 17.3 minutes per game.
This is Dillard's first career Player of the Week nod. She was named Freshman of the Week in 2022 after shooting 8-11 from three against Christian Brothers and averaging 21.5 points over the week. In 73 career games, Dillard is 166-401 (.414) shooting threes.
Dillard's Lady Bulldogs are 8-2 (3-0) and look to stay unblemished in GSC play this week at Auburn-Montgomery and Montevallo. On Thursday, Union and the Warhawks will tip off at 5:30 p.m.; Union at Montevallo is 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
Union head coach Mark Campbell claimed career win 750 in Friday's rout of CBU. With just 118 losses, the 26th-year boss owns a winning percentage of .864.
