Lady Bulldogs look to GSC semifinals against Montevallo as seniors Walsh and Maxon reflect on the program's growth and success

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Tonight, the Union University women's soccer team will face the University of Montevallo at 6:00 p.m. as they make their first appearance in the Gulf South Conference semifinals since joining the GSC in 2012. This is Union's third trip to the GSC Championships and second in a row after their appearance as a 5-seed in 2023 where they lost in the quarterfinals to 4-seed Montevallo. The team is 10-4-2 overall on the season. Ten wins is the most by a Union women's soccer team since joining the GSC.

"My overall thoughts about the season is it's been very good, very positive," said Head Coach Josh Alford. "We've taken strides in almost every different category, but we obviously don't want to have to quit yet. We want to see the season keep going."

Union seniors Sophie Walsh and Claire Maxon are confident headed into the match against Montevallo, knowing the team has put in the work to be successful.

"I think that we know that we can do it," Walsh said. "We know we're good, and we're excited to prove to everyone else that we belong here."

The group of Union seniors has been through major change in the program over their time here and are thankful that they have gotten to see the transformation and be part of it.

"I definitely think the change from my freshman, sophomore year to now is mainly just team culture stuff," Maxon said. "You establish the culture. You establish relationships with each other, and I think the rest of it goes from there. There's no doubt the success we're getting right now is from how we feel about each other."

Walsh spoke with a similar sentiment to Maxon.

"I think we can appreciate where we are more, especially as seniors because we know where we've come from," Walsh said. "I think the main difference is just the heart that the girls are playing with right now. We're playing for each other, and I think that really shows."

Alford gave high praise to his seniors as the team looks to extend its championship run tonight.

"They're leaving the program better than what they found it," Alford said. "I think they can say that for sure, and that's a testament to them and their personality and character."
