Union basketball set to host West Georgia

| By:
JACKSON, Tenn. - Union University's men's and women's basketball teams are set to host the University of West Georgia over the weekend. The Bulldogs will have an opportunity to make noise when they clash with the No. 9 West Georgia Wolves (No. 1 GSC). The No. 3/4 Lady Bulldog will look to sweep the season series over UWG after coming from behind to defeat them in Carrolton on December 3rd.

Men's Game

Union's men's basketball team is currently tied for seventh place in the GSC Rankings with Christian Brothers. After starting the season 0-4 in conference play, Union has since won seven out of their last ten including a win over the University of Alabama at Huntsville, who ranked top in the GSC at the time of the meeting. Tomorrow, Union will have another chance to take down a top team in the conference when No. 9 UWG takes the floor in the Fred DeLay Gymnasium.

The No. 9 West Georgia Wolves rank inside of the top three in the GSC for blocks per game (4.1), effective field goal percentage (55.6%), field goal percentage (48.9%), field goal percentage defense (38.8%), free throw percentage (73.3%), rebounds per game (27.78), scoring margin (13.2), and three-point percentage (39.7%). The Wolves leading scorer is Zawdie Jackson, who averages 21.7 ppg, 2.9 rpg, and 5.55 apg. Jackson has also been named player of the week twice up to this point in the season.

Coach Niven's roster is currently on a two-game losing streak after falling to Delta State in a three-overtime saga. Ahmad Johnson recorded his first double-double of the season in the game with 30 points and 10 rebounds. The Bulldogs also feature freshman Jordan Pyke, who has been named GSC Freshman of the Week four times this season. Pyke averages 13.4 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 1.5 apg. A key contributor in the Bulldog offense is Jeremiah Littlepage. Littlepage has scored in double-digits in 10 out of the Bulldog's last 11 games since falling to West Georgia in early December.

Women's Game:

No. 3/4 Union University Lady Bulldogs currently rank second in the GSC Rankings, only behind Valdosta State University. West Georgia currently sits in seventh place in the GSC Rankings for the 2023-24 season.

The No. 3/4 Lady Bulldogs, winners of nine straight, will look to sweep West Georgia after mounting a comeback late in the second half to defeat UWG earlier this season. In that game, Macey Lee scored a double-double, recording 22 points and 10 assists. Union ranks in the top three in the GSC for assists per game (19.8), bench points per game (47.1), offensive rebounds per game (14.4), scoring margin (96.3), scoring defense (32.7), turnovers forced per game (15.4), and three-pointers made per game (11.7).

West Georgia saw success against Union the last time the two met playing through Jada Powell, who recorded 18 points and 10 rebounds for West Georgia. West Georgia scored 79 of their 86 points either inside the three-point line or at the charity stripe in December. UWG ranks in the top three in the GSC for assists per game (17), field goal percentage (44.4%), free throw attempts per game (18.56), rebounds per game (40.83), and scoring offense (71.6).
