LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The Union University softball dropped the 3-game series to close out the regular season at No. 20 University of West Alabama. Union lost the first game 13-5 Friday evening. Union the lost the first game Saturday 7-0 and West Alabama rallied to clip Union 4-3 in the second game of the doubleheader. Union dropped to 24-24 on the season and 13-14 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama improved to 38-11 overall and 23-7 in league play.Â
Despite the losses, Union still clinched a spot in its second straight GSC Tournament, earning the No. 7 seed. West Alabama locked in the No. 3 seed overall.Â
Union will open play in the GSC Tournament, Wednesday, May 3 at 12 p.m. versus 2-seed Mississippi College. Union went 1-2 versus MC this season in the 3-game series played at Union.Â
This is the fourth GSC Tournament appearance for the Union softball team since becoming postseason eligible in the 2015 season. Union was the 5-seed in 2015 (0-2), the 7-seed in 2019 (1-2), and the 8-seed in 2022 (0-2) in its three previous trips.Â
In Friday's loss, Union got home runs from
Brooke Puckett and
Grace White. Puckett, Mackenzie David, and
Morgan Jennings led Union with two hits each. Puckett led with four RBI.
In the second game Saturday,
Riley Vaughn (12-11) struck out nine hitters in the tough loss. Union led 3-2 going into the bottom of the six when UWA scored twice. David hit a home run for Union, the 46th home run of the season for the Lady Bulldogs breaking the record of 45 team home runs set back in 2019. Six different Union players had one hit each for the team's six hits, while David,
Courtney Marler, and
Bryleigh Carneal led with one RBI each.Â
