JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University softball team completed the series sweep against Christian Brothers University Sunday afternoon in an extra inning thriller. Union moves to 18-13 overall on the season and 11-5 in the Gulf South Conference. CBU falls to 6-22 on the year and 1-14 in league play.
Union jumped out to an early lead in the first scoring three runs on a single from
Idalia Alarcon and a single from
Bryleigh Carneal. CBU chipped away at the early lead scoring a run of their own in the second. Union answered in the bottom half as
Hailey Sipes scored on an error from the catcher. Union pushed their lead to 5 in the third inning when they scored two more. CBU batted around in the fourth inning and scored four and cut the lead to one run after the fourth. CBU took the lead in the seventh after Josie Bond scored on an error to right field and Cara Alexander scored on a wild pitch. Union tied the game up in the bottom of the seventh as
Courtney Marler scored on a ground ball. They won the game in the eighth inning in walk off fashion as
Macey Neal scored on a fielder's choice from Marler.
Morgan Jennings led Union going 3-4 with a double, Carneal led the team with two RBI.
Emily Claire Felder started in the circle throwing three innings giving up five runs on three hits.
Riley Vaughn (9-4) earned the win throwing five innings giving up two runs on three hits and striking out six.
Up next for Union is a doubleheader non-conference matchup on the road against Miles College. The first game is set to take place Wednesday, March 29 at 2:00 p.m.
