YOUNGSVILLE, La. - The Union University softball played five games in the Mardi Gras Invitational to open the 2023 season. Union played five games, including three opponents ranked nationally in the NFCA Preseason Coaches' Poll.
Union played two games Thursday, falling 6-3 to #RV Southern Arkansas and 5-0 to #RV Drury. In the loss to SAU,
Zoey Neal and
Courtney Marler led with two hits each, while Neal (2) and
Morgan Jennings (1) recorded RBI. In the game versus Drury,
Bryleigh Carneal and Neal had one hit each for Union.
Riley Vaughn posted an impressive 12 strikeouts in the losing effort in the circle for Union.Â
Saturday's two games included a 7-0 loss to Oklahoma Baptist and a 3-0 loss to No. 6 Texas A&M Kingsville.
Idalia Alarcon and Marler led the way offensively for Union in the OBU game, getting two hits each, while
Addison Abell gave up just five earned runs with four strikeouts. Against TAMKU, Emily Claire Fielder held a 50 win team from a year ago to just three runs, two earned with five strikeouts. Jennings and Marler got a hit each for Union.Â
In the final game on the final day, Union was clipped by Harding 2-1. Union got one hit each from Jennings, Alarcon, and
Allie Whitfield with
Macey Neal getting the team's lone RBI. Vaughn took another hard luck loss in the circle while allowing just one earned run with two strikeouts in the game.Â
Up next for Union is another tough tournament, Alabama Huntsville Charger Chillout in Albertville, Ala. February 10-12.Â
