LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The Union University men's basketball team lost 84-73 Tuesday night at the University of West Alabama in the Gulf South Conference Tournament Quarterfinals. Union ended its season at 14-15, while West Alabama improved to 24-5 on the year.Â
Union was seeded seventh in the tournament, while West Alabama was seeded No. 2. UWA was also ranked No. 23/24 in the two national polls this week.Â
This was the fifth straight trip to the GSC Tournament for the Union men and eighth overall in the nine years of being GSC members.Â
Tylandrius Parks opened his career night with a dunk to give Union a 2-0 lead. After a 3-pointer from West Alabama,
Jeremiah Littlepage answered with a dunk of his own to give Union a 4-3 lead. That was the last lead for Union this night. West Alabama pushed its lead to double figures, 20-10, with 12:14 left in the first half. Union got as close as two points a few times late in the half but trailed 45-37 at the break. Union trailed 39-37 with just over four minutes left but did not score for the rest of the half. West Alabama closed the half on a 6-0 run.Â
Parks had 29 of Union's 37 first-half points including six 3-pointers.Â
In the second half, Union got as close as four points early, but the Tigers started to pull away. UWA led by as many as 18 points a few times before taking the 11-point victory.Â
Union was led by Parks with 41 points, besting his previous career high of 33 points from earlier this season. He added 12 rebounds for a double-double. Littlepage added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Boe Nguidjol finished with 13 points and
Jalen Johnson scored nine. Those four were the only four players to score for Union. Union shot 40 percent from the field, 33 percent (10-30) from long range, and 94 percent (15-16) from the foul line.Â
West Alabama was led by Justin Allison with 21 points on 6-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. Kuran Garner added 19 points, Thaddeus Williams scored 16 points, and Shardarrion Allen added 12 points. The Tigers shot 49 percent from the field, 55 percent (11-20) from long range, and 73 percent (19-26) from the free throw line.Â
