MONTEVALLO, Ala. The Union University men's basketball posted a 99-85 win at the University of Montevallo Saturday afternoon. Union improved to 12-11 overall and 12-8 in the Gulf South Conference. Montevallo dropped to 9-16 on the season and 7-14 in league play.Â
The win for Union snapped a 3-game skid and also put the Bulldogs one win away from clinching a spot in the GSC Tournament.Â
Nguidjol and
Justin Debuck hit 3-pointers on their first shots and the game was tied 6-6. Union never trailed in the game and this was the only tie of the game. Union pushed out to a 17-point lead at the break, 44-27.Â
In the second half, Montevallo got as close as 12 points, but Union dominated and extended its lead to as many as 29 points on two occasions, once at 90-61 and the last time 97-68 with 3:59 left. With Union coasting, Montevallo closed the game on a 17-2 run over the final 3:51, including the last 12 points.Â
Nguidjol's 35, a career high, came on a great shooting night for the forward. He was 11-of-13 for the field, 5-of-6 from 3-point range, and 8-10 from the foul line. He made his first eight shots from the fie, including his first four 3-pointers, while adding nine rebounds and three assists to his totals.Â
Tylandrius Parks scored 22 points with eight boards.
Jalen Johnson scored 14 points and
Layne Sarver added 10 points. Union shot 54 percent from the field, 43 percent (15-35) from long range, and 78 percent (14-18) from the foul line.Â
Montevallo was led by Bertolette with 20 points. Gardiner added 13, Knight and Shifflett scored 12 each, and Tharpe added 11 points. The Falcons shot 38 percent from the field, 28 percent (8-29) from 3-point range, and 76 percent (31-41) from the free throw line.Â
Up next for Union will be the final home stand of the season when Alabama Huntsville and West Alabama come to Jackson, February 16 and 18.Â
