This week in Union University Athletics: September 26 - October 2

JACKSON, Tenn. - This week for Union University Athletics included just one home event. The Volleyball team will host Mississippi College, Saturday, October 1 at 2 p.m. in an early season battle for first place in the Gulf South Conference standings. Women's golf opens the week at The City With Spirit Fall Classic Monday and Tuesday, September 26-27. The soccer teams will hit the road late in the week for a pair of road matches each. Soccer plays at Alabama Huntsville Friday and then West Alabama Sunday. The women's and men's cross country teams hit the course again this coming Saturday at the Louisville Cross Country Classic.

Women's golf is coming off a 7th place finish at the Drury University Invitational last week. Union freshman Brooklyn Verdugo finished tied for 16th place in the event and earned GSC Freshman of the Week honors for her work.
This week, the women are playing at The City With Spirit Fall Classic in Cleveland, Tennessee hosted by Lee University, Monday and Tuesday.
Union is coming off a 1-0 win over Spring Hill. Union split with home weekend, falling Friday night to a tough West Florida team 2-1. Union is 2-4 in the GSC with the two wins being shutouts and the four losses all coming by the same score of 2-1.
Union plays a couple of tough matches on the road this week at Alabama Huntsville, Friday at 5 p.m. and then Sunday at West Alabama at 1 p.m.
Union is 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the GSC.
Union went 0-1-1 last week, falling 2-1 to West Florida Friday night and then ending in a scoreless tie Sunday against Spring Hill.
Union hits the road this week for games at Alabama Huntsville Friday at 7:30 p.m. and West Alabama Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
Union is 3-6-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the GSC.
Union is coming off a 2-0 week in GSC play, getting wins at Valdosta State (3-0) and at West Georgia (3-1). The 5-0 GSC start is the best conference start since joining the league in 2012. Union has also won seven straight matches which is the longest streak since joining NCAA/GSC in 2012. It is the longest for a Union volleyball team since 10 straight in 2010. The lost streak in program history is 22 back in 1999.
Union has just one match this week but it is a big one. Union will host Mississippi College Saturday at 2 p.m. MC is 13-1 on the season and 4-1 in GSC play and is coming off a 3-2 win over nationally ranked West Florida. MC's only loss on the season is to Montevallo, the only other unbeaten GSC record other than Union. MC defeated Union earlier in the season at Union 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-23) in non-conference action.
Union is 12-4 overall and 5-0 in the GSC, one of two schools (Montevallo, 4-0) to have perfect conference records.
