Union women claim fifth GSC Title, third straight

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Union University women's basketball team posted a 58-44 win over Lee University in the 2022 Gulf South Conference Championship Game presented by TicketSmarter. Top seeded Union improved to 26-2 on the season, while Lee dropped to 24-7. 
The win for Union gives the Lady Bulldogs the automatic bid and top seed in next week's NCAA D2 South Region Tournament hosted by Union. Lee will also be playing in the region tournament next week.
Union also moved its winning streak to 23 games. 
Union's Bethany Dillard's 3-pointer started the scoring. Union pushed out to an 8-2 lead over the first three minutes. Union led by as many as nine points in the first quarter, before settling for the 17-9 lead by quarter's end. 
Shanique Lucas, Jaelencia Williams, and Ashtyn Baker scored two points each in a 6-0 Union run to start the second quarter. Union extended its lead to as many as 20 points in the second quarter, 43-23. A Lee 3-pointer set the halftime score at 43-26. 
Seven difference Union players scored in the first half, led by Samariah Thompson's nine. Union shot 54 percent from the field in the first half, including 4-of-8 from 3-pont range. Lee shot 37 percent from the field but managed 60 percent (3-5) from long range. Lee edged Union 15-14 in rebounds in the first half. 
The offense slowed to a crawl in the second half for both squads as Lee edged Union 13-10 in the third quarter Both teams managed just five points in the second half. 
In the fourth quarter, Union was 1-of-10 from the field and Lee was 1-of-11. 
Union was led by Williams with 13 points and 11 rebounds and was named the GSC Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Ashtyn Baker added 13 points and Samariah Thompson scored 11 points. Shanique Lucas finished with seven points and was named to the GSC All-Tournament team. Union shot 32 percent from the field, 22 percent (4-18) from long range, and 90 percent (18-20) from the free throw line. 
Lee was led by Garrett with 18 points including four 3-pointers. Schubert added nine points. The Lady Flames shot 29 percent from the field, 36 percent (5-14) from long range, and 61 percent (11-18) from the free throw line. 
The region tournament will be at Union March 11, 12, and 14. The seedings will be announced tonight, Sunday, March 6 during the selection show at NCAA.com.
